Final
For my end of semester final, I decided to challenge rape culture in society. Women who are raped are so often criticized for what they wore, despite the actual rapist doing the disgusting act of dehumanization. Instead of targeting these women for what they were wearing, we should be castigating the rapists for the terrible act of social injustice. I decided to color the images in a way so that when the model is wearing the dress, that is what the eye is drawn to. This is much like if a woman is wearing a revealing piece of clothing, that is how she blamed. Her skin is black and white, resembling how women's emotions and sense of self are faded. When the model is covered up so only her face is showing, her clothes are black and white and her skin is still colored. This reveals how society sees those who "cover up" to be more worthy than those who don't. This is highly misogynistic as well as unspeakably oppressive towards women when they are blamed for something they cannot control. Instead, we as a society must end rape culture and pursue the the persecution of those who think it is ok to sexually harass women.
I saw the image last night via email. I like it. The message is strong. I was thinking about the image on the right and how I wished she might have a different look on her face but decided against my own overthinking reaction...much of this, I realized, is about the fact that it IS the same person, just in different clothes. Nice work.
